The Memory of Water

7 March - 10 March
The Memory of Water

Written by Shelagh Stephenson
Directed by Elizabeth Maisey

On the eve of their mother's funeral three sisters meet and reveal the conflicts of the past and its grip on the present. The central metaphor - that water retains some biochemical memory of whatever has been dissolved in it however dilute: ''my mother goes through us like wine through water. Whether we like it or not. Nothing ends entirely.'' Families are both blessed and cursed by the generations before them and curse the ones that come after.

This is a wonderfully funny and deeply-felt play, a tragi-comedy that will have you laughing and crying as all good theatre should.

"Blessedly and mercurially funny… Shelagh Stephenson combines a flair for witty dialogue with a relish for the dynamics of theatre … a mistress of comic anguish" – The Guardian
